BOOK REVIEW: Second Chance by Sandeep Jatwa

Published: April, 2017

Pages: 200, Kindle Edition

Indian fiction is on the rise. In past months, it is not about the amount of books I have read specifically written by the Indian authors, but the quality of writing style is appreciable.Second Chance by Dr. Sandeep Jatwa is one of them.

Written elegantly, the story is about a successful businessman, Shekhar Kapoor, who’s account of good deeds is lacking depth is in negative. For him it is all about money, deceiving and exploiting other person’s weaknesses, insulting them and duping them. One day he receives a mysterious telephone call from what is called the City of Justice. Ignoring the cryptic warnings, Shekhar continues to live his life as he pleases, until one day, shortly after insulting a beggar in the street, Shekhar crashes his car and is killed.

And it is only when he is standing before the Bookkeeper who keeps all records of one’s deeds whether good or bad and being shown where his life had gone wrong, that Shekhar finally understands what life is all about. Will Shekhar be given the chance to walk on the path of redemption and rectify the wrongs he has done in the past? That is the question this book answers.

The plot has a steady pace and the readers, like me will enjoy that. The events that take folds are represented in the manner of building the story and that really helps to understand the emotion element author has used. The theme of redemption and human morals are touched but not very much in-depth. At some point, after reading it, I think there is no need to go in-depth here, but if the author would have thought likewise, especially when deciphering the scene between the Bookkeeper and our protagonist. It does share some boundaries with Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment as both are based on the single theme of redemption.

The characterisation resembles some realism and has a great amount of display in the second half of the book. The writing style is smooth and there is not a single fault with it.

Overall the book is a quick and engaging read if you looking something to pick up this weekend and finish it in one go. You won’t be disappointed.

4 out of 5!

Read my review on Crime and Punishment.

Note: I received this book from the author but that doesn’t mean my review is breaking all the rules.
